| Working of treatment of
Donepezil - Aricept |
Aricept or Donezepil is indicated in the treatment of Alzheimer’s
disease. Aricept is the only effective drug used in the treatment of
all stages of Alzheimer’s disease. It acts effectively in all three
stages namely mild, moderate and severe. Though Aricept or Donezepil
can not cure the disease it slows down the progression of the
symptoms.
Donezepil is a piperidine based potent, specific, non-competitive
and reversible inhibitor of acetyl cholinesterase. The main aim of
the treatment is to inhibit the breakdown of the chemical
acetylcholine by blocking the enzyme. Acetylcholine the
neurotransmitter gets destroyed due to an enzyme called acetyl
cholinesterase and this condition is Alzheimer. The drug Aricept is
effective in reducing the breakdown of acetylcholine. Thus Aricept
is effective in slowing down the progression of the disease.
Researches and tests have indicated that Aricept has to taken with
care to avoid unwanted health problems. In case of asthmatic and
pulmonary problems the doctor should be informed about the
medications taken for these chronic diseases. Before any surgery is
made upon the patient the doctor should be informed of the
medication of Aricept. Aricept or Donezepil is not advisable during
pregnancy and should be taken only when it is a must.
It is also not advisable in the case of nursing mothers. It is not
proved whether the drug is passed on to the breast milk. Breast
feeding mothers can take this drug strictly under the prescription
of a doctor.
The fact that the debate whether Donezepil is effective in treating
the mild, moderate and severe dementia still continues because in
practice the results are not apparent.
